Log Cabins
How we prepare your log home for stain
Depending on the situation, sandblasting, pressure washing and sanding are the industry standard methods for preparing a log home for stain, Be careful hiring contractors that do not have experience sandblasting or pressure-washing as an inexperienced painting contractor can turn your dream home into a real nightmare and cause extensive damage to your log home.
Sandblasting log Homes
Sandblasting using corn is an environmentally friendly way to prepare your log home for stain. It is less abrasive then sand as a media and can be used for mulch when done. Logs will not pit using corn as a media which will save time and expense not having to sand when completed.
Normal sandblasting can be extremely dangerous to your logs. Be sure the contractor you hire has experience sandblasting logs as the pressure required to sandblast log homes is considerably less then sandblasting metal or brick.
Pressure Washing Log Homes
Pressure washing is the most common method to prepare your cabin for staining. You must be careful the contractor has experience pressure washing log homes. The average pressure washing machine is very powerful and can cause damage to your logs if too much pressure is applied. We use a combination of water, bleach and tsp to treat the logs before pressure washing. This loosens the old stain and any left over mill glaze which then is washed off the logs surface safely without causing damage to the wood. Be sure the contractor works from the bottom up to avoid streaking the logs,
Log homes are able to be brought back to life with the right preparation process. Many other substrates such as cedar masonite or hardie board siding are much more forgiving when pressure washing. Double check that your contractor has experience and ask the process they intend to use before hiring a contractor to prepare your log home for stain.
